Durham, North Carolina-based Dirt Doctors Cleaning Service is a member of Cleaning for a Reason, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women undergoing treatment for cancer.
Approximately 11 years ago, the owner of Dirt Doctors Cleaning Service, Erika Lewis-Lunsford, experienced first hand how the effects of a cancer diagnoses can affect a family. Seeing her mother undergo treatment for breast cancer was devastating and exhausting for the entire family. During this period there was no time or energy for normal activities of daily living, let alone cleaning a house.
This experience inspired Erika to join the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation. As a member, Dirt Doctors' goal is to hopefully relieve some of the stress incurred by those undergoing cancer treatments.
The Cleaning for a Reason Foundation
The foundation was officially formed in May 2006, as a Texas non-profit corporation. Debbie Sardone, the founder, is a 25-year veteran of the house cleaning industry, and owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service in Lewisville, Texas. The foundation recruits residential housecleaning businesses to donate time and money. Each cleaning company commits to servicing two free accounts per month and contributes monthly financial pledges, which are used to help sustain the base operations of the program. The maximum each cleaning service will take on at a time is two patients. For a patient to qualify, physicians must verify their illness. Today, there are more than 900 partners that offer these free services to women throughout the United States and Canada. The maid services that are participating in the foundation have donated more than $1,300,000 in professional cleaning services and assisted more than 5,000 women with cancer.
